Worktop Surfaces: Best Surfaces for your Store

Welcome to our FAQ series! One of our most commonly asked questions and first on the agenda – which worktop material should I be using? When choosing solid worktop surfaces, bakery and coffee shop owners are often presented with a wide variety of materials. Solid surface worktops like Staron, Corian or Hi-Macs are popular for their seamless appearance and durability, but how do they compare to alternatives like laminate, quartz and stainless steel?

We work with a huge range of worktop surface materials, each with their own unique pros and cons, but quite often there are multiple options which come down to a preference on look and cost. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences between these materials.

Examples of Solid Surface Worktops (Staron, Corian, Hi-Macs etc.)

Solid worktop surfaces are synthetic materials made from acrylic, resin and natural minerals. These worktops offer seamless joints, making them ideal for creating a uniform, modern look in your worktop surface. Scratches and stains can be sanded out, making them easy to repair further down the line, offering an easily cleanable, hygienic surface. Each different brand comes in a wide range of colours and patterns mimicking natural stone, marble or solid block colour.

Solid surface offers a level of performance in terms of heat resistance, tolerating moderate temperatures up to 100oc but may be damaged by direct contact with hot trays and pots. It’s our preferred choice for the bakery industry – being somewhere between the lower end costs of laminate and higher end costing of quart and granite dependent upon finish and brand.

Laminate Worktops

Laminate worktops are among the most affordable options, composed of layers of paper or fabric impregnated with resin, bonded to a particleboard core. They offer a wide range of designs, from solid colours to faux wood and stone finishes. However, they are less durable than solid surfaces. Laminate can be prone to scratches, chips, and swelling from moisture if not sealed properly. Unlike solid surfaces, they cannot be repaired easily and would be less hard wearing over time.

Quartz and granite Worktops

Quartz, an engineered stone, is made by combining natural quartz with resin. It is known for its strength, scratch resistance, and ability to resist stains. Quartz worktops are non-porous, like solid surfaces, but have superior heat resistance. However, quartz lacks the seamless installation offered by solid surfaces, as visible joints are inevitable in large counter run layouts. It’s typically the most expensive material to work with in terms of material cost and labour, but offers a very high end look and feel to your bakery space.

Stainless Steel Worktops

Stainless steel worktops are an industry standard for food preparation work. Steel is a hard wearing, durable and an easily cleanable surface which offers unrivalled benefits for bakers and other food preparation professionals to work on. It can also provide a stylish look to display counters in the right setting, with various finish options to create the right look and feel for your space. Costing wise, steel has fluctuated in recent years but in general offers a mid-range cost against the options above.
